What Is After Construction Cleaning?
After construction cleaning — sometimes called post-construction or final clean — is the deep, detailed cleaning a space needs once building work is complete but before anyone moves in or uses it. It’s the step that turns a finished construction site into a livable, spotless home or office.
It is not the same as a regular house cleaning, and it’s not the same as the “broom clean” most contractors provide. It’s a distinct service built around one problem: construction leaves behind a specific kind of mess that ordinary cleaning can’t safely handle.

Why It’s Not a Job for Regular Cleaning
Construction dust is unlike household dust. It’s made of pulverized drywall, sawdust, concrete, joint compound, and sanded paint — particles that are abrasive, cling to every surface, and settle back down for days after the work stops.
Three reasons it needs a specialist:
- It scratches. Wiping construction dust off a new countertop or hardwood floor with a dry cloth can leave fine scratches in finishes you just paid for.
- It hides. Dust travels through the whole building and settles inside cabinets, on top of door frames, in vents, and behind fixtures — places regular cleaning never touches.
- It keeps coming back. Fine particles stay airborne for hours, which is why the job is done in stages with the right equipment, not one quick pass.
What’s Included in an After Construction Clean
A proper after construction clean is a top-to-bottom detail job. Here’s what it typically covers:
- HEPA vacuuming of every surface before wet cleaning, so dust is captured rather than pushed around
- Dust removal from ceilings, walls, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and vents
- Windows — glass, frames, tracks, and removal of manufacturer stickers and adhesive residue
- Paint, caulk, and adhesive spots removed from glass, hardware, and fixtures
- Grout haze cleaned off new tile
- Cabinets and drawers, inside and out
- Baseboards, trim, doors, and door frames
- Outlet covers and switch plates
- Appliances, including protective film removal and interior cleaning
- Bathrooms and kitchen fully detailed and sanitized
- Floors vacuumed and cleaned with the correct method for each material
The goal is simple: the space should be ready to live in, not just free of debris.
What Your Contractor’s Clean-Up Usually Doesn’t Cover
Most construction contracts include a “job site clean-up” or “broom clean” clause. In practice, that usually means debris hauled away, floors swept, and tools removed — and little more.
It typically does not include window washing, grout haze removal, cabinet interiors, fixture detailing, or the fine-dust removal that actually makes a space move-in ready. It’s always worth reading your contract and asking before the crew leaves. Many builders on the North Shore are happy to let you arrange the final detail clean separately — and the result is usually far better than a rushed broom clean.
When to Schedule Your After Construction Clean
Timing matters. Book the final clean after every trade is finished, including any punch-list touch-ups. Cleaning before the last bit of trim work or paint means paying to do it twice.
The ideal sequence:
- All work complete, including the punch list
- Final walkthrough with your contractor
- After construction cleaning
- Move in
If you’re moving into the space right after, pairing the after construction clean with a move-in clean is the most efficient way to do it.
A Note for Homes Built Before 1978
If your project involved an older Massachusetts home — and much of the North Shore housing stock predates 1978 — be aware that disturbed paint may contain lead. Lead-safe handling is regulated in Massachusetts and is work for a licensed lead-safe contractor, not a general cleaning service. If your renovation touched old painted surfaces, confirm with your contractor that lead-safe practices were followed before move-in.
